Depiction:
The sandstone obelisk bears a golden medallion with the portrait of Albrecht Dürer (facing Karlstrasse) and another golden medallion with the portrait of Willibald Pirckheimer (facing Maxplatz).
The two other medallions display the Great Nuremberg coat of arms with the maiden eagle.
On a stepped base to the sides of the obelisk stand two metal basins with lion masks as gargoyles.
History:
The fountain was put up in 1821 on the site of a lost secondary fountain of the Triton Fountain.
The fountain commemorates the former importance of the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg as a center of humanism.
It can therefore be understood as an expression of the self-confidence of the enlightened citizenry.
